The story I’m about to share might seem trivial compared to the title, but it does make the point.
My company throws an incredible “mid-winter bash” party, and last year I got to experience it myself for the first time. I dressed up nicely, but when a man at the party thought I was part of the event crew, I realized I was underdressed. Women around me were flaunting long gala dresses, each more sparkling than the other, while I sported a short green dress with a velvet jacket on top to keep me warm.
Determined not to make the same mistake this year, I ordered a gorgeous red gown. But even with my 4-inch heels on, it was too long. So, I had to rush to a tailor.
The turnaround was relatively long, and I received it just a day before the event. Imagine my dismay when I picked up the dress – the seam was uneven, with one side of the front slit shorter than the other. I could not fix it myself, it would look too tacky. If you know me, I can tolerate lots of imperfections but not when it comes to fashion.
My salvation was in my own wardrobe, and after much contemplation, I decided to go with my little “Ungaro” dress bought back in 1995. One of the few items that have stood the test of time and travels – definitely a vintage piece by now.
But let me go back to the point of this story, why did my attempt to wear the red gown fall through? Have you heard the saying “be careful what you wish for”? For more clarity, turn it into “be careful what you think of,” and you have your answer.
Your thoughts may be floating in your conscious mind, where you’re fully aware of them, or they may be buried deep in your unconscious. Either way, being mindful of their power can lead to surprising revelations.
At the end of the day, I can’t put all the blame on the seamstress.
