When I first heard the term “expert by experience,” it immediately resonated with me. I recalled all those countless conversations with subject matter experts who couldn’t quite grasp where I was coming from – both literally and metaphorically. We often seek help from others, hoping they understand and empathize with us, only to find they simply can’t. And that’s okay because our experiences are as unique as we are. Yet, despite our differences, we all strive to find ways to connect and relate to each other.
But let’s take a look at the concept of expertise. It is usually measured by academic credentials and professional achievements. However, there’s another form of expertise that is equally, if not more, valuable: the expertise gained through lived experience. An expert by experience can recognize, empathize, and provide valuable insights and wisdom that come from facing similar challenges.
An expert by experience is someone who has gained deep understanding and specialized knowledge through personal life experiences. They offer a perspective grounded in real-life challenges and ongoing journeys, providing an authenticity that formal knowledge alone cannot. They share genuine stories and insights that resonate with us on a personal level.
I’m not implying that formal education doesn’t matter – far from it. However, from my own experiences dealing with various subject matter experts, I believe that formal education alone is not enough. There often exists a gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. Experts by experience can bridge this gap.
There is a saying in my culture that goes something like this: “If you don’t have an old man around you, you should buy one.” This is what an expert by experience is – someone who has lived through it all, the good and the bad. So pay attention to whom you talk to next time and recognize those who’ve been through the wringer, they have some wisdom to share!
People who have navigated challenging family and work dynamics, faced cultural and social injustices, or endured economic hardships offer invaluable insights. Their personal narratives can raise awareness, help others in similar circumstances, and influence policy decisions, inspiring collective action. Like ripples from a stone cast into water, their impact extends far beyond their immediate reach.
Yet, as always, my advice is this: when listening to any expert – whether by knowledge or by experience – proceed with caution and ultimately follow your heart.
