No idea why I woke up hearing this song in my head. But somehow, Talking Heads’ song feels like the perfect soundtrack for the end of the year.
The close of December often feels like a house ablaze, not in destruction, but in transformation. This time of year has a way of making everything seem urgent. We rush to tie up loose ends, celebrate milestones, and dream of brighter days ahead. It’s a season of burning our old to-do lists and creating new ones, reigniting passions and letting go of things that no longer serve us.
Much like the song, this time carries a sense of chaos, movement, and energy, but beneath it all, we’re invited to join the dance and take control of the flames before they take control of us.
What do you want to burn away as this year ends? Is it an old habit, a lingering resentment, or the heavy weight of some unmet goal? And what fires will you nurture in the next year?
As the year winds down, I’m embracing its challenges and its lessons, “burning down the house” of this year with intention, clearing space for what’s to come. Whether it’s a spark of hope or a blazing fire of transformation, we have the power to ignite it.
I have been reflecting on this year with its challenges and its lessons. Every fire, large and small, has played its part continuing to shape me in ways I couldn’t have imagined. So here’s to the fire that warms us, fuels us, and, when needed, sets us free.
“Here’s your ticket, pack your bags
Time for jumpin’ overboard
Transportation is here
Close enough but not too far
Maybe you know where you are
Fightin’ fire with fire.”
